An Open Letter to My Mother

Dear Sweet Mother,

I always try to write a poem for you every Mother’s Day but I can’t because I end up writing a very lengthy poem. So, I decided, why not write a letter to you. You, I call my mother.

You know, I’m the best Christmas gift you have ever received. And with your name as Mary too, I can imagine your outburst of joy in your heart. Another Mary giving birth on Christmas day.

Mummy, you are an epitome of Grace, a living testimony. You taught me a whole lot of things, like dreaming big and reminding me that I can make it in life and live my dream life. Thank you for not giving up on me, and I’m sorry for not being the daughter you trained me to be. I can be very stubborn, but trust me Mum, I’m get better.

You sacrificed your life to take care of me. You’ve done crazy things to keep me alive, and I appreciate you, every day and pray for you.

Thank you for taking care of me and still taking care of me.

Wake Up With Me In Winneba: Aboakyer 2017

I have now gotten some rest and the energy to write and blog about Aboakyer 2017. I do not have much to write and enough pictures to add to it.

So they said the fun started on Thursday, when the #LemonThursday took place. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend. For me, the fun started Friday night, after my last class. Town was very full and alive. I bought a drink, Bricafi Drink, and laughed with friends, and laughed at them, especially those who fell into the gutter.

Saturday morning, I woke up…..late, watched some PrettyLittle Liars episodes and went out at 1pm. I could not attend the deer hunt, but I heard they caught a very tall one. Victory.

In the afternoon, there was a royal procession. This was my first time of watching the procession, even though I have witnessed the festival 4 times. Bummer.

At nighttime, Winneba was alive and full of people, music, drinks and food.

On Sunday, we went to the Run-Off Bar and Restaurant to meet Lil’ Win. He came to town. Who would want to miss dancing to “Mama Boss Papa”?

Monday was my resting day. Funnily enough, town was very empty.

Where have all the people gone?

This year’s Aboakyer was one of the best according to moi.

See you next year. You can’t afford to miss.

p.s. Wikipedia has got you covered if you want to know what the festival is all about

The MD Interview: That Guy Called ShayD

As the name says "ShayD" I just can't be predicted. You can't tell my next move.
-ShayD

Hello world and welcome to another interview with Marietta DeGrant. I introduce to you a new act, ShayD.

When I was interviewing ShayD, I realized that he is very passionate about his career as an artiste, and determined to move forward with music. He said music is his way of life. His life.

Read the short interview I had with him.

Marietta: Tell us about yourself

ShayD: I go by the name Nana Kojo Amakyi. Last of 3 children, born on 6th Sept, 1993. Attended St. Augustine's College in Cape - Coast then to the University of Ghana, Legon

Marietta: What kind of genre do you do?

ShayD: I'm into Afro Dancehall

Marietta: Apart from music, is there any other thing you involve yourself in?

ShayD: I am solely into music. Aside music I own a clothing line yet to come out "Psycho Wear"

Marietta: Why the name ShayD? Any history behind the name?

ShayD: As the name says "ShayD" I just can't be predicted. You can't tell my next move

Marietta: What is it with musicians and stage names? Can’t they just use their own name?

ShayD: I believe stage name gives an artiste the unique feature they need. Also makes you easily identified. Other artistes however use their own names, example Joe mettle. Lol 😀

Marietta: What inspired you to be an artiste?

ShayD: Well, I won’t say I was inspired. It is a gift I have had since birth. I will say it is a lifestyle.

Marietta: When did you come out of the sheets as an artiste?

ShayD: I have been following music since childhood. I was a member of the choir at church.

Marietta: Is there any singer/rapper that inspires you in the world of music, or was it an ordinary person?

ShayD: Talking about idols, I have a couple of people I admire, but the inspiration was all by myself. I said to myself, I have the talent why not go out there and do your own thing. And that is where it has brought me now

Marietta: Do you write your own lyrics?

ShayD: I am my own music writer, no ghost writers whatsoever

Marietta: Now to my inquisitive question, how did you meet Trigmatic?

ShayD: I met Trig together with Ghana’s finest producer B2 during one of the studio sessions. At that time I had the song done but without Trig's verse. B2 played the song, Trig listened and liked it and just then magic made.

Marietta: Are you signed to any record label?

ShayD: I am under PsychoMovement headed by myself.

Marietta: Drop your social media handles

ShayD:
IG: @justshayd
Twitter: @justshayd
Facebook: ShayD GH

Marietta: Give some shoutouts

ShayD: Shouts to my team Psycho Movement. Shouts to Dopenation and to everyone who supports me. I appreciate the love. It's your boy ShayD😀

Thank you very much for honouring this interview, ShayD. Get his latest music here

Inspiration took a walk

Happy May Day! and happy Aboakyer week from Winneba

Since the end of the Easter celebration, I have not been my creative self. I do not feel inspired to write or dream of anything, not to talk of doing something. I usually experience this sort of feeling as a writer a lot of times, but this one was just too much. I told my best friend about it and he told me I should socialize more.

First of all, I did not need socialization at that time. I need some time alone. Also, as a proud introvert, we do not appreciate socialization, even though, sometimes, in my opinion, socialization is fun.

I read some quotes, read my dreams and goals. Still, inspiration was nowhere to be found. Inspiration took a walk, without telling me it was going for a walk.

We, introverts, have mastered the art of finding ourselves when we are alone. Unfortunately, it did not work for me at the time that I needed it. I needed to go out.

One Saturday, I visited the beach with a friend to find inspiration. I stared at the ocean, trying hard to find a lesson. It just made mighty noise, telling me that he still rules the beach.

I shook my head….but one thing came into my mind.

I should keep my friends close.

Even though, the waves comes to the shore to steal a kiss from it, it comes back to hug them for a little longer. Friends are like that. Some get new friends and ignore you but you should still keep them close.

Sunday, I went to church, still searching for inspiration. Maybe, I would hear a still small voice, but confession time; I was more interested in looking for my friends who I haven’t since in a long while from Swedru and even Winneba.

Why was I more interested in that? I couldn’t tell.

After church, we went over to a friend’s house to pound fufu and eat. Talking, laughing, serious talks and feeling comfortable.

I got home after 4pm, and started planning my week, most especially the following day.

It was later at night that inspiration came back and inspired me of friendship.

Friendship. Why that?

I still can’t tell.

Inspiration took a walk and brought me something that was close to me. I needed not to go far to search for inspiration. Inspiration was in my social life, in my neighbourhood.

Inspiration took a walk, not a journey. Inspiration did not run away from me. It just went on a break by walking, but I went searching for it by running. It was just a stone throw.

Inspiration is just in front of you. You don’t need to go far.
