Christmas from the Store

Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store? What if Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!

--Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Hello world!

It’s been a while I wrote a blogmas post here. Life has been pretty busy, overwhelming. Is it just me, or time is really running quicker than normal? Today is 21st December, just 3 days and 17 hours to Christmas. By the time we realize, we have entered 2018.

Oh well, life itself just passes quickly by.

I was at work yesterday when it dawned on me that we have entered the 20s of the month, but I hadn’t had time to do a proper Christmas shopping for gifts and food. I then understood those who usually say they hadn’t got time to do anything.

Well, maybe, I do not know how to manage my time.

A thought came to mind. Christmas is not all about the physical things we use to celebrate. As I participate in the #LightTheWorld initiative, I realized Christmas is all about having time for your loved ones and the people who love you. I must not worry about not having time to do Christmas shopping, I must worry about not having enough time to spend time with family, friends and loved ones.
The #LightTheWorld initiative has taught me about the value of service and presence. Jesus Christ gave service to His fellow men, even though he is the King of kings. He took care of people and loved them.

The quote I wrote above came to mind. I have been watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas since I was younger, and this quote came in handy.

Do not worry about not having time and money to spend on the material things of Christmas, even though, it is so cool and fun to do such things. The most people thing is having the people you love around you during this time of the year.

The end!

Daily Gifts (An Excerpt from Christmas Stories for the Heart)

Another blogmas post is coming your way this morning. How has your December been so far? Mine has been full of work, work, work, and I cannot complain much. Between being a student and a worker, I have seen the difference. As a student, you get a little break but as a worker. There is nothing like break.

Anyway, I have been trying to enjoy every little moment I have to spare. I have been super busy, but I try to live life at peace.
For a minute, I didn’t know which blogmas post to write again, but as I was reading this festive book of mine, I read page 104 and it really touched my heart.

It looks so much like the Light the World initiative I am involving myself in, but it has more options and simple and daily things we should be practicing.

The book says we can call these daily gifts “our Christmas Projects.” We could practice one of these little projects, one moment/day/period at a time.

They listed some suggestions in the book and I will list some here

Mend a quarrel

Seek out a forgotten friend

Write a long overdue love note

Hug someone tightly and whisper “I love you so.”

Forgive an enemy

Be gentle and patient with an angry person

Express appreciation

Gladden the heart of a child

Find the time to keep a promise

Release a grudge

Smile. Laugh a little. Laugh a little more

Play some beautiful music during the evening meal

Apologize if you were wrong

Turn off the television and talk

Treat someone to an ice-cream cone (yogurt will be fine)

Pray for someone who helped you when you hurt

Encourage an older person

These are some of the many things they listed in the book. You can try and do some as time goes by.

Merry Christmas!

๐ŸŽ€ ๐ŸŽ…๐ŸŽ„A Merry Chips-Mayai ๐Ÿ™Œ

Jamani kila mtu!

Imebaki siku kumi na mbili na dakika kidogo kuzaliwa Yesu Kristo. If you don’t understand, I said, Hello world! It is just 12 days and some hours to Christmas day. (Not a direct translation)

Lolz xx. That was Swahili. [Whispers] Between you and me, I don’t even know how to read it myself. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

How are y’all doing? This morning, I saw the Harmattan’s shadow but it looked like it wanted to rain too. His appearance this year was dramatic. Maybe, he had a chat with the rain before the rain left. ๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ˜’

That was just by the way.

Meet Chef Addo. For this Christmas, he is teaching us a new recipe all the way from Tanzania! This is a great opportunity to add a new meal to your Christmas dinner/ New Year party.

Today, we will be learning how to cook chips-mayai, a very popular dish in Tanzania!

Thanks to Chef Addo for sharing this with the Marietta DeGrant Blog and with some friends.

Ingredients:

8 medium sized Irish potatoes

3 medium sized carrots

2 medium sized green peppers

3 medium sized tomatoes

10 eggs

Salad oil to fry the potatoes

Salt to taste

Method

Wash and peel potatoes

Cut potatoes into French Fries sizes and wash them again

Put oil on fire at a reasonable heat

Fry the potatoes and set them aside after frying.

Cut vegetables (green pepper, carrot and tomatoes) into smaller sizes.

Set vegetables aside and beat the 10 eggs together. Add salt to taste

Put frying pan on fire again and pour a little oil for shallow frying

As you wait for the oil to be hot, add vegetables to the beaten eggs and mix together

Take some French fries (few) and spread them on the hot pan.

Take a ladle and fetch some of the beaten eggs and vegetables and spread them over the pan. Make sure it does a full circle of the pan.

Cover the pan with a cover, and let it heat for about a minute. Make sure the heat is moderate to avoid burning.

Without removing the cover, and using a napkin to hold the cover, flip the pan so that the chips mayai lands on the cover.

Put the pan back on the fire and let the uncooked part of the food stay at the bottom of the frying pan.

Allow it to stay on the pan for a few minutes and flip it back again.

Serve on a plate

Serve with a scoop of ketchup and a cold drink.

Enjoy your meal.

A Chef happy with the results

Thanks to Cephas and Caleb for supporting this festive cook-out!

Book Review: Christmas Stories from the Heart

Every December, I do a festive book review and this year’s own is a book I bought in the middle of the year and I am so glad that I bought it. It is one of the best festive book ever. It is filled with miracles and sweet little nuggets which you can keep and cherish in your hearts all year long.

One thing I love about the book is the foreword which was written by Avalon, an award winning singing group. I totally agree with the foreword and I can read it over and over again.

They said Christmas seemed so much simpler when I was a child……in fact it seemed like pure magic. It’s true and the foreword reminded me of the cartoon movie, A Charlie Brown Christmas, where Charlie Brown complained of the way Christmas has been commercialized.

This book can be a perfect gift, for people who love reading and treasure little stories and poems that touch the heart.

Get a copy, and thank me later.

Prepping For 2K17 + #LightTheWorld Review

Hey world

3 days till the end of the year. I bet some people are making New Year resolutions. Good luck on doing that. I stopped making New Year resolutions some years ago, so those kind of resolutions like losing weight (I don’t have to lose weight. For someone like me, I have to put on some flesh.), going to church every Sunday (I already do that), saving money (No comments on that one), and all that jazz. Nesta wrote about the failure of New Year Resolutions and I totally agree with him.

I am not discouraging you on making New Year resolutions. You have every right to, but please make realistic ones.

During the festive season, I was involved in a campaign called Light the World. We invited people from all walks of life to participate. Every day from 1st December till December 25th, we were required to participate in an activity that would show kindness and let us do good to ourselves, family, friends, strangers and other people around us.

If you were following me on Twitter and read my Blogmasposts, you will see me posting an activity daily for #LightTheWorld, especially on my Twitter.

It was like an advent calendar, and it was refreshing doing it and I felt so good. Even though, sometimes, I was so busy I lost track once, or twice, but I tried hard to get back. I can admit that not every day was perfectly made.

The aim of the campaign was to light the world, and turn the activities into goals for the New Year to continue to light the world, so it doesn’t end on the 25th. It continues into the New Year and throughout ourselves.

I really enjoyed engaging myself in this advent activity, and I hope next Christmas, there would be more activities like this.

How are you prepping for 2017? Any goals, resolutions?

The Life before Christmas

Welcome to the dawn of Christmas Eve! It is Saturday, and I am highly awake. Tomorrow is Christmas, and my birthday! I am fully determined this year to celebrate it, though it won’t be in grand style. This Christmas won’t be like the last years. I fell ill in November and most of our Christmas savings were used to pay the hospital bills.

So, it is the life before Christmas, and all through my dark room. Not a creature was stirring, not even the mosquito, except for the dog that just sent the barking signal for others to follow. I won’t be surprised if I use a longer time to write this post because I pause continuously, and frequently. I do not have visions of sugar plums dancing in my head. Father Christmas wouldn’t be around this dawn. He would come this evening, the night before Christmas.

So, today is the eve. I have nothing much planned for today, except for hanging out with friends, playing games and taking selfies and pictures. I might as well, go round the neighbourhood and see what other churches are doing tonight. Or just go out and take a couple of pictures.

I am currently silently playing Christmas music. I might as well, tune up the volume to annoy the Scrooges. (Silly Me). After publishing this, I am going to bed.

Can you believe tomorrow is Christmas? I am overjoyed.

What are your plans for Christmas Eve?

Christmas Shopping

It’s the 19th of December and I haven’t really started my Christmas shopping yet. Every year, I tell myself, Marietta, next year, do well to start early. But I fail. I totally fail.

Remember this Instagram post last year?

It is 5 days and some hours to Christmas and I am here with my lists. I stared at it yesterday, and thought of eliminating some items, but elimination is hard, substitution is harder.

I have now till Wednesday to do Christmas shopping. Should I even add Thursday?

Christmas shopping is so much fun. I think I should be employed as a Christmas Shopper for people who are busy. That would be a great job.

Christmas shopping can be done anywhere; the Shopping Malls, local markets near you, Kaneshie, Circle a.k.a Dubai and Makola. It is a fun thing to do, to be part of the people struggling to buy some stuffs and running here and there.

Are you done with your Christmas shopping? Or are you now starting?

Holiday Morning Routine

So, my Countdown to Christmas App says it is 6 days, 18 hours to Christmas.

Happy Sunday. Since, we are transitioning from work/internship routine, some things might change. There might be some differences like staying longer in bed, having a better social life and having more festive things at your disposal.

Today, I am sharing my holiday morning routine with you.

When I wake up in the morning, I check my phone for any missed calls, text messages, and social media. After that, I go downstairs to have my morning devotion. I am currently studying the New Testament with the help of a study guide and it is fun and more easy to understand.

Now, it’s time to bash the house with Christmas music. I am a huge fan of Christmas music. I wrote a blogmas post about it here.

After devotion, I check my Light The World campaign calendar to check what we are supposed to do for the day. If you do not know about it, you can read more details about it here. I encourage you to participate.

After checking up, I try to blog. I am doing Blogmas, where bloggers write about festive stuffs through out the month of December. We have different ways of doing it. For me, I am writing and blogging everyday in December.

It is time for chores. We don’t have much to do at home. We sweep, fetch water and prepare fire. I then go to the bathroom to do those hygienic stuff.

After, I am through with that, I check social media again, to get abreast with current issues. Some handles gives you words of encouragement and motivation. I try to share some updates on social media, especailly with blogmas and #LightTheWorld. As I do all these things, I try to spread christmas cheer by singing out loud. Sometimes, my mother comes to me and says Do you know that you are disturbing?

I try to get some breakfast from left over meals or try to purchase some food items for breakfast. After having some breakfast, I check my planner. Sometimes, I take my notebook to write down some inspiration, or think about life. (I am trying to write my book, or become a better person day by day). I look out the window to watch the store nearby. I’ll need me some Mirinda in the afternoon, I always say in my head.

Now, it’s time for makeup and outfit picks. I am mostly out and about during the holidays, doing personal errands and family errands, so I am mostly in trousers and blouses. My makeup is usually minimal, but I give my lips the bold look. As I walk to wherever, or if I get into the trotro, christmas music continues to play in my head.

And that is my simple morning routine. It’s nothing extraordinary.

Has your morning routine changed for the holidays?

Bedtime Stories: Jesus Comes For His Birthday Part 2

Welcome to the part two of the children’s Christmas story; Jesus Comes For His Birthday. If you missed part one, you can read it here.

Jesus Comes For His Birthday Part 2

The next morning, she headed to Michelle’s house. After ringing the bell at the gate twice, a woman appeared at the gate.

“Good morning, Ma,” she said, stroking the little present she held in her hands. “Is Michelle home?”

“Yes. Come in.”

She entered and saw Michelle sitting on the sofa watching a Christmas cartoon with some of her classmates. Michelle stood up as soon as she saw Adoma at the door.

“Adoma?”

“Hi.” Adoma reluctantly greeted.

“Umm, hi,” Michelle responded nervously. She felt bad after accusing Adoma falsely for taking her ribbon. She avoided eye contact with Adoma. “What are you doing here?”

“Ermm….I came to give you a Christmas gift and say Merry Christmas,” she said.

Michelle’s face lit up. “Really? For me?”

Adoma nodded and handed it over to her. “Here.”

“Well, thank you,” she quickly opened it and it was a box of ribbons of all kinds…..even her favourite, a butterfly ribbon. One she always wanted.

“Wow, thank you,” Michelle said with excitement and hugged her. “I’m sorry I called you a thief,” she said in a low tone.

“It’s all right. Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas, Adoma.” They broke free and she said. “Come and join us and watch the Christmas Cartoon we just got. We have sobolo here too.”

“Okay.”  Adoma went to sit with her other classmates and they ended up talking about other girly related things.

_______________________________________________________________________________

On Christmas Eve, after Mr. Bekoe donated the box pf stuff to the orphanage, they went for their church’s Nine Lessons and Carols festival. Adoma and her siblings enjoyed the carols they sang. After, Adoma went to say hi to her friends, giving each of them a hug, and wishing them a Merry Christmas.

On Christmas morning, she quickly got up and wet round about the house to wake her parents and siblings up. “Come on, wake up, it’s Christmas! Come on!” she exclaimed and ran to the Christmas tree in her pajamas.

“Wow!” So many presents were under the tree. She couldn’t wait to open hers. “You guys, hurry up.”

When the family gathered in the living room, Adoma began to search for hers. “Kuukua! Here’s yours,” she handed her a big box with her name on it. “Nana Kwadwo, yours is that big green box over there. Mama look! Your name is on it. I’ve found mine!” Kwame and dad’s own must be at the other side.”

Adoma began to open the one she found and it was also ribbons with a note in it. “Wow! Mama, look! It’s from Michelle.”

“That’s wonderful, Adoma,” Mrs Bekoe smiled. Adoma found more presents under the tree and opened them. Everyone was happy with what they each got.

After they had Christmas dinner, Adoma walked to her mother, helping her to wash the dishes with Kuukua.

“Mama, how can you be sure that Jesus Christ really visited?” she asked, hoping that she was not losing faith.

“Adoma, you know, Jesus Christ even visited you before today. You became friends again with Michelle, that’s one way of Jesus visiting you because, in a way, you reconciled with him. Donating stuffs to the little orphanage, you gave him gifts. Hugging your friends after carol service, you told him happy birthday and He is here right now.”

Adoma closed her eyes for a moment. “Yes. I can feel Him and He was with me all the time.” She beamed at her mother. “Jesus visited us this Christmas. I hoped he liked his birthday. I hoped He enjoyed it.”

“He did and He loved it,” Kuukua said. All this while, she was secretly listened to their conversation, though she behaved like she cared less.

“Really?”

Kuukua nodded with a smile. “Yes. Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas.” Adoma and Mrs. Bekoe said and hugged Kuukua together. It was a sacred mother and daughter moment.

“Sweet girl hug,” Mr. Bekoe said, standing at the door. Mrs. Bekoe walked towards him and gave him a hug. “Merry Christmas, honey.” He kissed her cheek which made her smile. Nana Kwadwo and Kwame, together with Kuukua and Adoma joined the hug and it was no, sweet girl hug. It was a sweet family hug. Adoma even frlt Jesus joining the hug circle.

As Adoma climed her bed, she took the picture she drew of her and Jesus under the pillow and smiled. “Happy birthday, Jesus and Merry Christmas. Hope you enjoyed it. Good night,” she kissed it and put it under her pillow. She pulled her covers to her chin and closed her eyes. She felt Jesus say, “I loved it, Adoma. Thank you very much.” Adoma smiled in her sleep.

Thank you very much for reading this symbolism story. I hope you enjoyed and I hope they enjoyed it.
Check back on the blog tomorrow for another blogmas post.
Good night.

Bedtime Stories: Jesus Comes For His Birthday

I wrote this children’s story a long time ago. I do not know what inspired me to write it, but I had fun writing in symbolism. I wrote this for children between the ages of seven and twelve. If you know any child around you around that is between those ages, you can let him/her read it, or you can read it to them at bedtime.

Have fun with this literary Christmas story.

Jesus Comes For His Birthday

“Mama! Very soon, it would be Christmas again,” Adoma said with excitement. “We have to decorate our home so that Jesus would come again!”

Mrs. Bekoe smiled. “Yes, Adoma. Have you been good this year?”

“Yes! I can be sure of this one.”

Adoma was a nine year old girl who has obsession for Christmas, because of the decorations, carols and the most important of all, the birth of Jesus Christ.

That year, she promised herself to be good the whole year so that Jesus would be happy to spend time with her when he visited.

Her father came in, from town with Adoma’s three older siblings, with newly bought Christmas ornaments and a Christmas tree. She quickly ran down and was filled with the Christmas Spirit all at once.

“Daddy, when do we start trimming the tree?”

Mr. Bekoe thought for a moment. “Hmm. What about after supper tonight.”

“Yay!” She exclaimed. “I’ll get to put up the star this year.”

Kwadwo, her older brother, rolled his eyes. “You always do.”

“I don’t even care.” Kuukua snarled. “When you grow a little older……and matured, you’ll find that to be childish.”

“No, I won’t!” Adoma barked.

“Okay! Enough with the arguing!” Mr. Bekoe warned. “You guys shouldn’t be doing that.”

Adoma stuck her tongue out at Kwadwo and Kuukua and walked over to where the newly bought ornaments were kept.

“You guys are home?” Mrs. Bekoe asked, poking her head from the kitchen door.

“Yep!” Mr. Bekoe answered with a smile. “This Christmas, the malls are mobbed than ever.”

Mrs. Bekoe laughed heartily. “I have to go tomorrow and purchase foodstuffs for the holidays. I’ll have to go earlier than I thought to avoid traffic.”

“Mama, look! Figures of those in the manger!” Adoma jabbered. “Mary looks beautiful.”

“She is”, Mrs. Bekoe said, shaking the excess water of her hands and walked into the sitting room to check out the ornaments and the tree. “When do we start with the decorating?”

“Right after supper!” Adoma yelled with excitement.

“Whoa!”

“Can we have supper earlier today, Ma?”

Mrs. Bekoe laughed. “Anything for you, baby.”

“So, what about supper right now?” she asked.

There was silence. Nana Kwame, Adoma’s other brother checked their clock and it was past 1pm.

“Oh come on, we haven’t even had lunch yet.”

They all laughed. “Patience moves mountains, Adoma.” Mrs. Bekoe said, and laughed again. Mrs. Bekoe liked to laugh heartedly. People would say that’s her hobby.

Adoma spent her afternoon, drawing funny pictures of Christmas. She even drew a picture of her and Jesus and wrote Me and Jesus under it.

She frowned. She remembered she had a grouch with a classmate of hers. They weren’t friends anymore because she accused Adoma of stealing her flowery ribbon.

Would Jesus still visit even though she’s not in talking terms with Michelle, her classmate?

Definitely.

Definitely not!

She just needed to find out.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Just before supper, when Adoma helped her mother set the table, she narrated her grouch story with her mother.

“Adoma, you have to make up with her as soon as possible,’ Mrs. Bekoe softly told her as she placed a spoon beside the plate.

“But Mama, I did not steal her ribbon!” she blurted out. “And what if she doesn’t want to talk to me?”

Mrs. Bekoe sighed. “Come, Adoma.” Adoma walked towards her mother as Mrs. Bekoe sat on the dinning chair. “You know, Jesus Christ did not come down from Heaven to die for only sinners.
That’s why we sing Joy to the World, the Lord is come. We don’t sing Joy to Sinners, the Lord came for you or whatever.”

Adoma’s lower lip dropped and she sighed. “So, what should I do?”

Since school is on Christmas break, why don’t you visit her tomorrow? And if she still doesn’t want to talk to you, you’ve done your part.”

She nodded and smiled. “Okay, she threw her arms around her mother and hugged her. Then she broke free. “Let’s set the table, eat, and then trim the tree.”

Her mother giggled as her daughter pulled her from the chair.

_________________________________________________________________________________

After supper, the family trimmed the tree with the ornaments with music, playing behind Christmas music.

“Does anyone have anything he would like to donate before Christmas?” Mr. Bekoe asked his family, who were all watching the Christmas lights on the tree blinking.

“Yes. Yep!” went the responses.

“There’s a box in the kitchen. Just drop them into it, and make sure it’s full before Christmas Eve.”

“When do I get to put the star?” Adoma asked.

“You know it’s Christmas Eve,” Kwadwo said exasperatedly.

Adoma jumped up from the sofa and took some tinsels. “Time to decorate my room also.” She picked up more ornaments and walked to her room. First, she pasted the funny Christmas pictures she drew earlier in the day on her walls. She went on to use the tinsels around her room. She drew out a Christmas tree out of a green cardboard, cut out the shape, and pinned it on her wall.

An hour later, she was sitting on her, finished decorating, getting ready for Jesus Christ.

But there was one thing she had to do before Jesus could come.

Reconcile with Michelle.

Even the song Hark the Herald Angel Sing said God and sinners reconciled.

She stood up and looked for stuffs she wanted to donate; some clothes, books and toys. She took a piece of plain A4 sheet and drew a Christmas tree with ornaments. She wrote To whoever who wants it….Merry Christmas. She folded it nicely, put it into an envelope and sealed it.

Would Adoma get the courage to go and make up with Michelle? Would Michelle even talk to her? Would Jesus Christ even visit?
Check back on the blog tomorrow at this time to read the second part of the story.
Tell the little girl/boy to wait.

Poem Talk: Long Long Ago

This poem is found in the book, A Treasury of Christmas Classics. It is one of the books I love to read during the holidays. There are classic poems and beautiful short stories in there. It even includes the classic Christmas story, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

One of the poems I love is Long Long Ago. I have no idea who wrote it because the name of the poet was not written. It is a very simple poem and easy to understand, easy to memorize. If you are having a festive carol activity or event where kids are supposed to perform spoken word, this poem is perfect for it.

Christmas poems are beautifully written, and I hope to write a couple of them and publish them one day.

Stanza 1
Winds through the olive trees
Softly did blow,
Round little Bethlehem
Long, long ago.

This stanza takes us to the scene, and the time that the Christ child was born. The night was calm and the winds blew through the trees softly. I can imagine the sound of the wind, peaceful and quiet and soft.

Stanza 2
Sheep on the hillside lay
Whiter than snow;
Shepherds were watching them,
Long, long ago.

This stanza talks about the shepherds watching their white sheep. The sheep were lying down on the hill, and their shepherds sat by them, watching them with love.

Stanza 3
Then from the happy sky,
Angels bent low,
Singing their songs of joy,
Long, long ago.

In this stanza, the angels appear, singing songs of great joy unto the shepherds. I can imagine how it felt like to be sitting on the ground, with their flock and other shepherds and all of a sudden, a great light comes with angels singing in their melodious voices. How thrilling it would be.

Stanza 4
For in a manger bed,
Cradled we know,
Christ came to Bethlehem,
Long, long ago.

The Christ child is born, and he laid in the manger in Bethlehem.

I love the poem so much. It is dear to my heart. It is one of the Christmas poems I’ll cherish and teach.

Do you know of any Christmas poem that is dear to your heart?

Reasons Why I Look Forward To Christmas

I know. We are in a tensed political year. But I am not worried about anything. Actually, celebrating Christmas in an election year is super boring. I mean, everything is all about PO-LI-TICS. It’s Christmas people. Do not ever forget that at all.

I am always looking forward to Christmas. No matter where I am or no matter the time of the year, I am looking forward to it.

Why do I look forward to it? Well, apart from it being my birthday, and it being Christmas too, I have many other reasons.

It is the celebration of the birth of Christ, who came to atone for my sins.

I get to wander aimlessly at the mall. (Don’t judge me)

It’s the only time I get messages from some friends. (Hmmm! Some friends I have!)

It’s my birthday!

The smell of Christmas

I get to decorate, deck the halls.

The Christmas Music. The joy of listening to Christmas Songs (traditional, modern, the classics)
alone can make you burst.

Food! Food! And FOOD!

The presents I receive

Giving gifts to the people I love

Being with family

Christmas trees

New outfits

Photoshoot

In the month of December, that’s the time when ripe plantain is in season.

The movies

The feeling of Christmas Eve when we sing Silent Night.

Glitter, glitter and more glitter

The nostalgic feeling of Christmas Pasts

The smell of freshly baked goodies

The use of Christmas Related Emojis (Silly ME)

The snowy things I get jealous of

What do you look forward to every Christmas???

p.s. Don't forget to get involved in this Christmas fun exercise. It is not too late to join. I invite the whole world to participate. Read more about it here
